Lease--Joseph Turner to Jonas Phillips (1780)

Joseph Turner is Benjamin Chew's brother in law. Benjamin Chew and Elizabeth Oswald Chew acted as executors of Joseph Turner's estate. Margaret Oswald Smyth, sister of Elizabeth Oswald Chew, was a legatee of Thomas Turner's estate, and later an executor and heir of Joseph Turner's estate. As part of Joseph Turner's estate, Benjamin and Elizabeth Chew also became administrators of Elizabeth’s mother Mary Oswald's estate, as she had appointed her brother Joseph Turner as one of her executors.

She inherited Wilton Plantation, but was unable to maintain the property, forcing her to rent it to various tenants. After her marriage to Frederick Smyth, the couple petitioned for financial support from the estate through Benjamin and Elizabeth Chew. Their requests for money became so persistent that the case was brought into arbitration.
